Reaching into their past, the Pittsburgh Pirates have brought Gene Lamont back to the organization.
The former Pirates manager will serve as a special advisor to manager Don Kelly, the team announced on Friday. Last week, Kelly was promoted from bench coach to manager following the firing of Derek Shelton.
Lamont managed the Pirates from 1997-2000. He also served as a coach with the Pirates under Jim Leyland from 1986-91 and again in 1996.
In 1993, Lamont was the American League Manager of the Year after leading the Chicago White Sox to the American League West title. He was the White Sox’s skipper from 1992-95.
Lamont was the Detroit Tigers’ bench coach from 2006-13 for Leyland and 2014-17 for Brad Ausmus. Kelly played for the Tigers for seven seasons between 2007 and 2014.
Third base coach Mike Rabelo will also now handle bench coach duties. Triple-A Indianapolis manager Chris Truby will join the staff as a coach.
Truby will be in uniform Friday night for the opener of a three-game series against the Phillies in Philadelphia. Lamont will join the Pirates on Monday night for a game against the Cincinnati Reds that begins a seven-game homestand at PNC Park.
Taking Truby’s spot at Indianapolis will be Shawn Bowman, the Pirates’ associate director, coaching and development/minor-league field coordinator.
