The Cleveland Guardians look to complete the sweep of the Detroit Tigers this afternoon at Comerica Park.
The Guardians pulled within 4.5 games of Detroit after last night’s 4-0 win, with starter Gavin Williams and the bullpen combining for nine shutout innings.
Cleveland has now won six in a row and sits just 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the third AL Wild Card spot. Seattle’s 10-game win streak ended with a loss to the Kansas City Royals last night, giving the Guardians a chance to gain more ground.
Today, the Tigers turn to their ace, Tarik Skubal. The left-hander enters with a 13-5 record, 2.26 ERA, and over 200 strikeouts for the second straight year. Skubal was lifted early in his last outing in Miami due to side tightness, but both he and the team say he’s ready. Against Cleveland this season, Skubal has been nearly untouchable, throwing 15 scoreless innings over two starts.
Tanner Bibee takes the mound for the Guardians. He’s 10-1 with a 4.44 ERA but seems to have rebounded after a rough summer. In September, Bibee has posted a 1.15 ERA over two starts, including a complete game shutout of the Chicago White Sox last week. He also blanked Detroit earlier this year, going seven scoreless innings.
Prediction
Expect a low-scoring game. Both Skubal and Bibee have shut down the opposition in recent weeks, and runs could be scarce again this afternoon. The Tigers’ ace, however, has consistently owned Cleveland this year, and Detroit’s lineup should find just enough to avoid the sweep.
Prediction: Tigers 3, Guardians 2
