CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Hunter Greene delivered a masterful performance on Thursday night, pitching one-hit, complete game as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Chicago Cubs 1-0.
Greene, who improved to 7-4, struck out nine and walked one in his first career complete game. He retired Michael Busch on a deep drive to the warning track for the first out of the ninth inning, then struck out Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ to seal the victory.
The Reds’ win keeps them within two games of the New York Mets for the third National League wild card spot.
Greene’s performance was historic, as he became the first MLB pitcher to throw a one-hit shutout with nine or more strikeouts in under two hours since Cubs starter Kerry Wood achieved the feat on May 25, 2001, according to OptaStats.
