Cody Freeman: Spark plug and award winner.

The infielder, who has been a spark of energy for the club over the last month of the season, was named the Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year for the Rangers’ system on Thursday.

It was the second consecutive year Freeman, 24, won one of the Rangers’ minor league yearly awards. Last season, he was the defender of the year.

He was joined in winning awards by 22-year-old right-hander David Davalillo (Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year), right-hander Eric Loomis (Reliever of the Year), outfielder Yeremy Cabrera (Defender of the Year) and catcher/first baseman Cal Stark (True Ranger).

Before joining the big league roster in August, Freeman hit .336 with a .931 OPS over 97 games for Triple-A Round Rock and was the Pacific Coast League leader in batting average, second in slugging (.549) and third in OPS .

Since joining the Rangers, he has had several big hits and moments in the run that got the club back into contention for a playoff spot. The Rangers are 13-7 in the game he’s started since he was called up for the second time on August 18.

About the other winners:

Davalillo went 6-4 with a 2.44 ERA in 107 innings, 0.93 WHIP, .184 opponent batting average, and 126 strikeouts to just 28 walks across 23 games (22 starts) between High-A Hub City and Double-A Frisco in 2025.

Loomis, 23, recorded a 2.77 ERA for 52.0 innings with 84 strikeouts, a 1.06 WHIP figure, and a .169 opponents batting average in 39 relief appearances across three levels in 2025. He was a 16th-round selection in 2024 from Missouri State.

Cabrera, 22, posted a .982 fielding percentage in 223 total chances and appeared at all three outfield positions in 102 games with Single-A Hickory this year, mostly in center field. His eight outfield assists led all Texas minor league center fielders and were tied for the most among Carolina League center fielders with Carolina’s Braylon Payne.

Established in 2019, the True Ranger award highlights a player who represents the core values of the organization in a positive light both on and off the field. Stark, 23, was an undrafted free agent in 2024 out of Tennessee, but was born in Arlington and played at both Weatherford and Navarro junior colleges.
