KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Highland senior Abby Lay and Kirksville senior Paislee Clark took part in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel in a non-conference game on Thursday.
Kirksville was able to scratch out a 3-2 lead, holding off a late Highland rally in the seventh inning.
Lay took a hard-luck loss after pitching six innings with eight strikeouts, while allowing six hits, one walk and three earned runs.
Clark was the winning pitcher after going 6.1 innings with four strikeouts, while allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs. Neely Miller recorded the final two outs to get the save.
Lady Tigers catcher Morgan Crawford went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Kirksville right fielder Chloe Magruder went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while second baseman Macey Lehmann went 1-for-3 with a run.
Lady Cougars leadoff hitter Keera Rothweiler went 2-for-3 with a walk, run and an RBI. Ali Lundberg and Manda Jennings had the other two hits for Highland.
Up next for Highland (11-5) is a home game against Lewis County rival Canton (5-7) at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
