The Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 11-7 on Friday night, September 19th, scoring 7 runs in the 8th inning and sending 13 batters to the plate.
Boston pounded out 12 hits and 7 different plays knocked in a run, as Boston’s offense finally showed signs of coming out of the deep freezer.
Trailing 3-2 with a runner on 1st, Jarren Duran hit a 2 run homer to put Boston in the lead for good. It was Duran’s 16th homer of the season.
Alex Bregman was 1-3 with a solo homer in the 3rd inning. It was his 18th of the season.
Ceddanne Rafaela was 4-5.
Nate Eaton was 2-4.
Masataka Yoshida and Romy Gonzalez each had a double.
Garrett Crochet picked up the win and is now 17-5. He went 6.0 innings and allowed just 4 hits and 3 runs He struck out 9 and walked 3.
The Red Sox were leading 11-3 going into the bottom of the 9th, but Chris Murphy allowed a grand slam, to allow Tampa Bay a fleeting moment of hope, before he struck out the final batter.

Boston is 84-70 with 8 games left to play. They are in 3rd place in the AL East 5.0 games back of Toronto and 2.0 games behind the Yankees. The Red Sox are tied for the 2nd Wild Card Spot with Houston, with Cleveland 1.5 games back. The Red Sox magic number to clinch the Wild Card spot is 7. Any combination of Red Sox wins and Cleveland’s losses and Boston is guaranteed a wild card spot.
