The Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks play the middle game of their three-game set today at Chase Field.
The Diamondbacks are three games out of the NL Wild Card race after dropping last night’s opener to the Phillies, 8-2. Arizona got on the board first with a Ketel Marte solo shot in the bottom of the first.
Trailing 3-2 at the end of seven, Diamondbacks reliever Jake Woodford gave up a total of five runs in the final two innings that blew the game open for the Phillies.
The road ahead remains tough for Arizona. They face the toughest schedule in the majors, with series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres up next.
Still, the Diamondbacks have a chance today with the pitching matchup leaning in their favor. Zac Gallen gets the start for Arizona. He enters with a 12-14 record and 4.73 ERA, but he’s been very solid since August, posting a 3-2 record and 2.81 ERA.
Gallen had one bad outing over that stretch, allowing five runs in 6.2 innings earlier this month to the San Francisco Giants, but he bounced back last week with another six-inning outing in which he limited the Giants to just one run. He’s also contained potent offenses like the Dodgers in recent weeks. So not only are the trendlines good, but Gallen is also tested.
The Phillies go with Aaron Nola tonight. He’s 4-9 with a 6.44 ERA on the season and has struggled over his last seven starts, with a 3-3 record and 8.49 ERA.
Nola pitched a scoreless six innings earlier this month in the Phillies’ sweep of the New York Mets, but then was hammered by the Kansas City Royals’ bats the next week, allowing six runs in six innings. Nola did face the Diamondbacks earlier this year, not allowing a single run over six innings.
Prediction
Arizona’s urgency, combined with Gallen’s sharp recent form, should give them the edge at home. The Phillies’ offense has been on fire, but the Diamonbacks can put up runs too — and Nola may be very hittable tonight.
Prediction: Diamondbacks 6, Phillies 4
