The Philadelphia Phillies are National League East Division champions and postseason bound, but the next step is securing a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

What are magic numbers? 

According to MLB.com, the phrase “magic number” is used to determine how close a team is to making the playoffs or winning the division. 

A team’s magic number represents the combination of wins needed by that team and losses by its closest competitor to clinch a given goal. Every time a team wins, its magic number decreases by one. Similarly, every time that team’s closest competitor for the division (or Wild Card) loses, the magic number also decreases by one. 

When does the MLB postseason start?

The first games of the Wild Card Series are Sept. 30.

If the Phillies earn a first-round bye, the team wouldn’t start postseason play until Oct. 4

How to watch the Phillies in MLB postseason

The National League division series, which would be the first time the Phillies play, would be televised on TBS.

If the Phillies advance to the NL championship series, the games will be on TBS.

If the Phillies make the World Series, the games will be on FOX.

Who will the Phillies face in the NL Division Series?

While the wild card races in the National League are in flux, if the season ended today the Phillies would face the winner of the Wild Card Series between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Brewers would face the winner of the wild card series between the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs.
