A baseball coach was injured by gunfire on Sunday during a morning youth players game in Waller County west of Houston, not far from the Katy area.

He was coaching a youth tournament at a baseball facilities venue called RAC-Katy, when several shots were heard, causing players and parents to run for cover, setting off a few moments of panic.

A bullet bounced off a pole, according to Waller County Sheriff’s deputies, hitting the 27-year-old coach in one shoulder.

He was taken by Life Flight to a hospital where’s recovering from the wound.

In a statement the RAC-Katy office said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

The Texas Colts baseball team regularly practices at the facilities, and some of the players said after the incident on Sunday that some shots were heard Saturday as well, but the Sunday shots were thought to be a lot closer.

Investigators said Sunday afternoon that the origin of the gunshots was likely a nearby property, where some gun enthusiasts were shooting off some practice rounds.

In a statement, the Texas Colts said:

“This morning, during a baseball game, an unfortunate incident occurred involving recreational shooting on a nearby property. The local police department was immediately notified of the possible illegal hunting and responded to the scene in an effort to locate and apprehend the individuals involved.

“During this time, a coach was struck in the shoulder. On-site medical personnel provided immediate care, and he was transported to the hospital for further treatment. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as he receives treatment for his injuries.

“The police have since apprehended the individuals in question. We are taking every single step possible to ensure this does not happen again on our property. Any future practices or games at the facility are at a pause until law enforcement and our internal investigation has been completed to ensure the safety of all that visit the facility.”
