The Chicago Cubs will be competing in the National League Wild Card Series after they were swept by the Cincinnati Reds this week.
The Cubs lost a 1-0 decision on Sunday, their second 1-0 loss of the series against the surging Reds, and as a result the Milwaukee Brewers won their third straight Central Division title and their fourth in the last five years.
Thanks to their win, the Reds have also pulled into a tie with the New York Mets for the third and final wild card spot in the National League, and they own the tiebreaker over New York, according to MLB.com.
Those Mets will be headed to Chicago for a three-game series against the Cubs beginning on Tuesday night, and they’ll finish the season against the Miami Marlins.
The Reds meanwhile will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ballpark this week, and then will finish the season with a three-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
Current MLB Playoff Picture
If the season were to end today, the Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies would own the top two spots in the National League, and would secure a first-round bye into the National League Division Series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who came into action Sunday with a four-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West, would take on the third wild card team in the National League, which at this point would be the Reds.
The Padres then would face the Cubs in a best-of-three wild card series at Wrigley Field beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The two teams have played one playoff series against each other, with the Padres capturing the National League Championship Series in five games during the 1984 season.
Shockingly, the Detroit Tigers have slid into the third-best record in the American League, and they would take on the Houston Astros in the wild card round. The New York Yankees would host the Boston Red Sox in the other series.
The Toronto Blue Jays currently own the best record in the American League, while the Seattle Mariners, who have been surging to end the season, own the second-best mark among division leaders.
