When Juan Soto said the team that gets hot in September would go all the way, many fans expected an explosive Mets comeback. Instead, the team has turned out to be the coldest of them all.
The Mets are running out of time. After a rough stretch that has seen them lose 11 of their last 15 games, New York has slipped out of control in the NL Wild Card race. They come into Chicago tied with the Reds, but sitting behind them due to a tiebreaker. Every game left on the schedule is a must-win.
The Cubs, meanwhile, are in a much different spot after clinching a playoff berth. At 88-68, they are locked into October, but are unlikely to catch Milwaukee for the NL Central crown. For them, this series is about finishing strong and setting up for the postseason.
That said, only one team will be under immense pressure to draw a result in their favour, and that is the Mets.

The Mets will send David Peterson to the mound. The lefty has put together a solid year, going 9-6 with a 3.98 ERA and 149 strikeouts. He has been reliable at times, but New York needs him sharp on Tuesday with the season hanging in the balance.
The Cubs, meanwhile, will counter with rookie Cade Horton, who has been one of their biggest surprises. Horton owns an 11-4 record with a 2.66 ERA and 95 strikeouts. His ability to keep hitters off balance has been a key part of Chicago’s push.
At the plate, the Cubs, who struggled against the Cincinnati Reds, will be counting on a better performance from their hitters to back up Cade Horton in the opener. Rookie Matt Shaw, who missed Sunday’s game to attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial, is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Seiya Suzuki will also be a key player to watch.
The Mets’ offense has outperformed their pitching. Soto and Francisco Lindor have been consistent contributors, but haven’t received the same support from the defense and pitching, which has been the major cause of their downfall. Fans can expect some fireworks from their superstars, including Pete Alonso, but all eyes will be on their pitching.
