Stephen Kolek entered his third start of the season facing the Seattle Mariners at Petco Park looking to keep his scoreless innings streak intact. He was also trying improve to 3-0 on the season and he was trying to lead the San Diego Padres to a win. However, none of those goals were accomplished and San Diego lost to Seattle, 5-1.

Kolek’s scoreless innings streak came to an end when the Mariners leadoff man, J.P. Crawford, hit a home run on the first pitch of the game to take a 1-0 lead. Kolek saw base traffic throughout the first inning, but did not allow another run.

Crawford’s first inning, first pitch home run was a harbinger of things to come for Kolek and the Padres. Rowdy Tellez hit a two-run home run to right field in the top of the fourth inning to give Seattle a 3-0 lead.

Julio Rodriguez led off the top of the sixth for the Mariners with a single. He was followed by Cal Raleigh, who hit a two-run home run to left field to put Seattle up, 5-0.

Kolek allowed a single to the next batter, Randy Arozarena, and that was his last batter of the night. Kolek allowed five runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts in five-plus innings pitched.

San Diego pitchers did not allow another run for the remainder of the game.

Padres batters recorded eight hits and had multiple runners in scoring position throughout the game. San Diego was unable to get a hit with a runner in scoring position and finished the game 0-for-7 in those situations.

Luis Arraez led the San Diego offense with three hits in four plate appearances. Jake Cronenworth hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the fourth inning and brought in the lone Padres run in the bottom of the ninth inning when he hit an RBI-double to left, which allowed Gavin Sheets to score from first base to make the final score 5-1. Cronenworth finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

San Diego will try to get back in the win column against Seattle, Saturday at 5:40 p.m.
