D1Baseball has recently gone through its list of top additions from the NCAA Transfer Portal and South Carolina has three players, all pitchers, who were among the top prospects. The top site covering college baseball ranked the top 50 hitters and top 50 pitchers and second-year head coach Paul Mainieri is getting some help on the mound.
Mainieri and his staff brought in 27 newcomers with 24 being from the portal and three being freshmen. Of those two dozen players, the D1Baseball staff have three in what amounts to the top 100 players.
USC Upstate right-hander Amp Phillips was the highest-ranked of the bunch at No. 15 among pitchers. Wake Forest righty Josh Gunther is No. 25 and former Florida right-hander Alex Philpott is on the list at No. 35 among all transfer pitchers in the country.
Phillips was 7-2 with a 3.64 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched last season at USC Upstate. He struck out nine in six innings in a start against Clemson in the 2025 Clemson Regional. Prior to his time with the Spartans, he went to Spartanburg Methodist for his first two seasons of college, where he struck out 51 batters in 45 2.3 innings and also redshirted one season.
D1Baseball wrote, in part: “Phillips is a strong addition for the Gamecocks after having quite an impressive 2025 campaign as a weekend starter for the Spartans. Phillips was up to 95 mph with his fastball last spring, while also sitting at 92.8 mph with his FB, per our partners at Synergy. He sometimes utilizes a true curveball in the upper-70s, but otherwise attacks hitters heavily with a 78-81 mph slider, which had a 36% whiff rate last season.”
In two years at Wake, Gunter had a 3.41 ERA and six saves in 26 appearances. Last year, he struck out 47 batters in 29 innings pitched in 2025, helping Wake to the NCAA Tournament and the NCAA Knoxville Regional. He made 28 appearances out of the bullpen in 2024, striking out 38 batters in 31.1 innings.
D1Baseball wrote, in part: The Gamecocks secured an outstanding addition to their bullpen in the offseason in the righthanded Gunther. Gunther is up to 96-97 mph with his fastball, and has a 30% whiff rate on the offering. The slider (low-80s) and cutter (mid-to-upper 80s) are swing and miss offerings for Gunther with whiff rates 49% and 46%, respectively, per our partners at Synergy.
Philpott had two seasons at Florida with three wins and 44 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched in 2025 while going 2-2 with 28 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched as a freshman in 2024. He had a 7.12 ERA for his career with the Gators.
D1Baseball wrote, in part: “Philpott’s 7.12 career ERA in 67 innings over two seasons at Florida isn’t an accurate barometer of his talent. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound righthander has top-five-rounds potential if he can harness his exciting stuff. Philpott never found a groove in his time at Florida, but will have plenty of opportunity to earn a prominent role in Columbia next season.”
South Carolina did not place any hitters among the top 50 in the country, according to D1Baseball. Two former pitchers – RHP Tyler Pitzer (No. 19) and LHP Ashton Crowther (No. 40) – were ranked as outgoing players.
Of the top 50 hitters on the D1Baseball list, there are 28 who are coming to the SEC this season, including 11 of the top 15. There are 31 pitchers in the top 50 that are coming to play in the league this year.
