Reds’ Nick Martinez talks perfect relief outing, huge win over Cubs

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez retired all seven batters he faced to help the Reds beat the Cubs 1-0 and catch the Mets in the NL playoff race.

The Cincinnati Reds are in the heat of an MLB postseason race in the last week of the regular season, one game out of the playoffs with five games to play.

The Reds held the last wild card spot in the National League before a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 23. Before the loss, the Reds were tied with an identical record with the New York Mets, but held the head-to-head tie breaker, going 4-2 against New York in the regular season.

Meanwhile, down 6-1 in the sixth inning against the Cubs, the Mets stormed back and scored five runs in one inning for an eventual 9-7 win, a woeful result for Cincinnati, which is now one game back of the Mets.

The Reds have two in-division series to close out the 2025 season. Cincinnati will play two more games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 at home, then has a three-game finale on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers starting on Sept. 26.

Here’s how to watch the Reds’ next regular-season game against the Pirates.

The Reds’ next game is at home against the Pirates at 6:40 p.m. Sept. 24.
