TORONTO — Instant reactions from the Red Sox‘ 7-1 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Wednesday.
1) The Red Sox improved to 87-71. Their magic number to clinch a postseason berth is down to two (a combination of Red Sox wins and Astros losses, as of now).
2) Garrett Crochet reached the 200-inning mark, becoming the first Red Sox pitcher to accomplish the feat since Eduardo Rodriguez threw 203 ⅓ innings in 2019. Crochet tossed eight innings, putting him at 205 ⅓ innings this season. Crochet and Giants’ Logan Webb (201 ⅔ innings) are the only two major league pitchers who have reached 200 innings so far in 2025.
3) It marked the fourth time this season Crochet has pitched at least eight innings in a start and the 14th time he has hurled at least seven innings. He allowed three hits and no walks while striking out six. He threw 100 pitches, 69 for strikes. The lefty topped out at 99.1 mph. His 36 four-seam fastballs averaged 97.2 mph, up from his 96.4 mph season average, per Baseball Savant.
4) Masataka Yoshida blasted his third home run, a 399-foot, 103.5 mph solo shot to right field that put Boston ahead 4-0 in the fifth inning. He also delivered an RBI double in the first inning to make it 1-0.
It was Yoshida’s fourth straight two-hit game. He has had six two-hit games in his past eight games.
5) Boston handed their ace an immediate lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. After Jarren Duran struck to open the game, Trevor Story and Alex Bregman hit back-to-back singles off future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer. Yoshida’s RBI double made it 1-0, then Romy Gonzalez added a two-run single to make it 3-0.
6) Carlos Narváez‘s 408-foot three-run homer in the eighth inning put the Red Sox ahead 7-0. It was his 15th this season. Before the game, Alex Cora talked about Narváez leadership.
7) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got thrown out for arguing balls and strikes after Crochet struck him out looking for the first out of the seventh inning. Hitting coach David Popkins also got tossed moments later.
8) The game ended when Alejandro Kirk hit what should have been a single to right field but Wilyer Abreu threw him out at first base.
9) The Jays finally scored in the ninth inning when Isiah Kiner-Falefa homered on a 99.5 mph fastball from rookie Payton Tolle.
10) The Red Sox and Blue Jays will play the final game of their three-game series Thursday at 7:07 p.m. Righty Brayan Bello (11-8, 3.34 ERA) will start for Boston. Shane Bieber (3-2, 3.57 ERA) initially was scheduled to start for Toronto but the Jays pushed him back to Friday and haven’t announced a replacement.
