The New York Yankees kick off the final weekend of the regular season tonight with a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees enter tied with the Toronto Blue Jays atop the AL East. It’s a remarkable turnaround for the Bronx Bombers: in early August, they looked destined to fall out of contention, but now they’re fighting for the division crown on the season’s last weekend, with a playoff berth already secured.
To advance, New York must win the division outright, as Toronto holds the tiebreaker. A division title would also bring the Yankees an added bonus — a first-round bye — pushing them a step closer to their 28th championship.
On paper, closing the season against the AL East’s worst team looks like a gift. But the Orioles remain dangerous, especially with tonight’s starter, Trevor Rogers.
The left-hander has been one of baseball’s most overlooked breakout arms, going 9-2 with a 1.35 ERA across 17 starts. His numbers are no mirage: in September alone, he’s faced the Yankees, Dodgers, and Blue Jays — all top-tier offenses — and allowed just two earned runs over 16.1 innings. Last week against New York, Rogers pitched six scoreless innings of one-hit ball to earn the win. He hasn’t given up more than three runs in any outing all year.
That means the Yankees will likely need to do their damage against Baltimore’s bullpen. The pressure is also on New York starter Will Warren, who brings an 8-8 record and 4.35 ERA.
Warren has been steady since late July, with his only rough outings coming against the Boston Red Sox. He lost his last matchup with Rogers despite allowing just one earned run (plus two unearned).
The margin of error tonight will be razor-thin. Still, Warren has shown he’s capable of rising to the moment, and this challenge offers a chance to sharpen his postseason form. The Yankees’ bullpen, always a question mark, will need to hold up as well.
Prediction
This matchup is close to a coin flip, but the Yankees’ offensive depth gives them the edge. One swing can turn the tide.
