The Los Angeles Dodgers (90‑69) begin their final series of the season tonight on the road against the Seattle Mariners.
Both teams have already clinched their divisions. The Dodgers are locked into the No. 3 seed and will face the winner of the final NL Wild Card spot in the opening round. The Mariners, meanwhile, have secured a first-round bye. They cannot fall below the No. 2 seed and still have a shot at grabbing the top seed in the AL with a strong finish.
The Dodgers hand the ball to Emmett Sheehan, who enters 6–3 with a 2.86 ERA. His September has been even more impressive — 1.48 ERA across the month — making him one of L.A.’s most reliable arms down the stretch.
That’s saying something, considering Yoshinobu Yamamoto has posted a 0.67 ERA in the same span. The Dodgers’ rotation depth is a strength, but bullpen reliability remains a concern.
Recent games have seen Clayton Kershaw and Roki Sasaki used out of relief, and Sheehan could find himself in that role in the postseason. Tonight is a chance for him to fine-tune before high-leverage outings in October.
Seattle turns to George Kirby (10–7, 4.24 ERA). Kirby has endured a shaky September with a 5.89 ERA, hurt by two exceptionally bad outings in which he gave up seven runs. More recently, he’s had competent performances, including six scoreless innings against Houston last week.
Still, Kirby seems like a big question mark for their rotation heading into the postseason. The Mariners will need him to steady himself heading into October.
Predictions
The Dodgers have the edge with Sheehan’s form and their lineup’s ability to grind out runs. Kirby may have the stuff to keep Seattle in it, but his inconsistency tips the scale toward Los Angeles.
Prediction: Dodgers 5, Mariners 3
