The Red Sox and Detroit Tigers head into Game 2 of their last regular-season weekend series with different vibes. Boston is celebrating its first trip to the postseason since 2021, while Detroit is fighting for its season after a stunning collapse in the second half.
The Red Sox, who let go of some big names mid-season, clinched a playoff spot Friday night with a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win. Ceddanne Rafaela delivered the game-winner in the ninth, scoring Romy Gonzalez and sending Fenway Park into a frenzy.
For the Tigers, the loss was another gut punch. They were holding a 12.5 lead over Cleveland at the end of August in the AL Central, but Detroit now trails the Guardians and has just a half-game edge over the Astros for the final AL wild card spot. If they don’t turn it around this weekend, it could go down as the biggest collapse in MLB history.

Boston will send left-hander Connelly Early (1-1) to the mound. He has not been used much this season, but he will look to give the Sox a good start before handing things over to the bullpen. His last outing came against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday when the leftie gave up two earned runs in four innings pitched.
Detroit has not officially named its starter, leaving open the possibility of a bullpen game with everything on the line.
Talking about the offense, Ceddanne Rafaela, who came up clutch in Game 1, and Masataka Yoshida will be key players to watch at the plate for the Red Sox. Yoshida has racked up a team-high batting average of .436, while Rafaela has also been a key contributor in recent games. Alex Bregmen, who gave a fitting response to critics after Friday’s win, will also be the player to watch.
For Detroit, Spencer Torkelson and Jahmai Jones will need to come big in a must-win game. Spencer has been batting .308 during the past 10 games, while Jones has been batting .333 with a double, a home run, and six walks.
