Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Tommy Edman has been dealing with an ankle injury since the end of April, spending time on the injured list two different times.

The Dodgers took their time with his most recent IL stint, hoping they could put the injury behind him once and for all ahead of the postseason.

Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to work.

Edman was removed from Wednesday’s game in the top of the 11th inning after his RBI single. He then sat out Thursday’s game in which LA clinched the National League West.

He’s, again, out of the lineup on Friday, and Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times revealed manager Dave Roberts said Edman’s ankle was “a little sore,” keeping him out heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

The Dodgers, of course, are likely proceeding with ample caution with the Wild Card series beginning this upcoming Tuesday. However, it’s a little concerning for LA that Edman’s ankle injury is still keeping him out of games with the postseason coming up.

Edman was the National League Championship Series MVP last postseason after joining LA in a midseason trade, and was rewarded with a five-year, $74 million contract extension this winter. After a red-hot start, Edman has cooled into a below-average offensive season, slashing .229/.278/.387 with 13 home runs, 49 RBIs and an OPS of .665.

Edman is an above-average defender at multiple positions, and the Dodgers need his versatility come October. Thus, they will likely be especially careful with him this weekend as they play for nothing, with the Wild Card series beginning on Tuesday.
