The New York Yankees play their second-to-last game of the regular season this afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees opened the final series with an 8-4 win, powered by two home runs from Giancarlo Stanton and another from Aaron Judge. Stanton is proving that, even with limited playing time, he remains an impact bat who can rise to the moment in high-leverage games in the fall.

Judge, meanwhile, continues to cement his case as the most complete hitter in the American League, entering today batting .330 with 52 home runs. The postseason will bring bigger challenges, but New York’s stars look ready.

While Will Warren struggled Friday (four runs in five innings), the bullpen slammed the door, allowing just one hit and no runs over the final four innings. That’s an encouraging sign for a relief corps that has been shaky for most of the year and will be crucial behind the Yankees’ frontline starters in the playoffs.

The postseason picture remains unsettled. The Yankees have clinched a spot but are still tied with the Toronto Blue Jays atop the AL East. Because Toronto owns the tiebreaker, New York must finish with a better record to take the division. Given the Yankees’ record, the AL East will come with an added bonus: a first-round bye.

This afternoon, rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler gets the start for New York. He’s 3-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 13 starts, but September has been rough, with a 5.09 ERA on the month. He’ll look to rebound against the Orioles, a lineup he handled well just last week, allowing only one run and three hits across 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.

The O’s hand the ball to Tomoyuki Sugano, a 35-year-old rookie from Japan. Sugano began the year solidly but has worn down in the second half, posting a 5.82 ERA over his last 15 outings. He’s 10-9 with a 4.54 ERA overall, and while he blanked the Yankees in April, his last two starts against them have been rocky, giving up seven runs in 6.2 innings combined.

Prediction

The Yankees should jump on Sugano early, and Schlittler has already shown he can manage Baltimore’s bats. Expect New York’s power to carry the day again.

Prediction: Yankees 7, Orioles 3
