After falling short at the doorstep of a World Series appearance last year, the Cleveland Guardians are back in the MLB Playoffs as they look to continue a fantastic finish to the regular season.
Following a walk-off win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday, the Guardians have secured a berth into the American League postseason. Currently, the Guardians hold the No. 3 seed, but they could also end as the No. 6 seed pending Sunday’s results.
While we don’t know if the Guardians will be on the road or hosting in the Wild Card round, playoff baseball in Cleveland at Progressive Field may be on the horizon.

The Guardians have clinched a playoff spot and are likely to clinch the AL Central and currently sit as the No. 3 seed in the American League, which means they would host the Wild Card round.

The Guardians most likely scenario is to finish as the No. 3 seed and be at home for their Wild Card games against a TBD opponent. However, if the Detroit Tigers dethrone the Guardians for the AL Central, the Guardians would play the Wild Card round on the road as the 6th seed. If the Guardians reach the American League Divisional Series out of the Wild Card round, they’ll enter as the lower seed. That would mean they host Game 3 and a hypothetical Game 4 as long as the series didn’t end in a sweep.

If the Guardians advance to the American League Championship Series, it becomes a best-of-seven game series with the winner heading to the World Series. If the Guardians are the favorite, they will host Games 1, 2, 5 and 7. In the more likely scenario that the Guardians are the lower seed, they will start the series on the road and would host Games 3, 4 and 6.

Should the Guardians make the World Series, homefield advantage goes to the team with the better regular-season record. Its not the most likely scenario given the best teams in the National League have higher win totals, but if the Guardians have a better regular-season record, they would host Games 1, 2 and hypothetical Games 5 and 7. If not, they would host Games 3, 4 and then Game 6 should the series require it.
