SAN DIEGO – Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts hit home runs in the first inning, kick-starting the San Diego Padres offense in a 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night at Petco Park.
San Diego (89-72) had three home runs, with Elias Díaz adding another two-run shot in the second inning as the Padres have hit home runs in 18 of 24 games during September. Arizona (80-81) dropped their fourth straight game and were held to two runs or less for the 37th time this season.
“That was very impressive, it was a fun way to start the game off like that,” said manager Mike Shildt.
However with the Chicago Cubs winning their game earlier in the day over the St. Louis Cardinals, that result locked in that San Diego will be traveling to Wrigley Field for the three-game NL Wild Card series, which will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
After the fast start there was concern in the fourth inning when Díaz appeared to injure himself on a swing, where he reached for his side after a miss. Freddy Fermin replaced him the rest of the way.
“Hopefully we avoid something that’s very serious, more day to day, but I applaud him for self-regulating and feeling it, and making the decision to get out of there,” Shildt said. “It’s sore clearly, it looks like it’s mild, who knows with these things especially in that area, but the medical team is optimistic, we’re optimists by nature but also realistic so we’ll see.”
The Padres offense got it going early, as Tatis led off by hitting another monstrous home run on the second offering from Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez. The elevated fastball got crushed into the top deck of the Western Metal Supply Co. down the left field line for the 25th blast of the season for Tatis.
It was the third straight game that the right fielder has left the yard, his first three-game homer streak since collecting three in a row from Sept. 10-13 last season. Tatis’s six home runs in September are the second-most he’s hit in a month this season, having hit seven in April and only notched five across June through August.
Arraez followed up by extending his hit streak to 15 games by lining a fastball to center field, promptly coming home when Bogaerts hit his first home run since Aug. 9. The elevated cutter got ripped 423 feet down the left field line into the top deck as well for Bogaerts’ 11th home run of the season and an early 3-0 lead.
The strong swings continued in the second as Ryan O’Hearn roped a double down the left field line to start. After a fly out, Díaz made it the fifth time in 19 games that the Brown and Gold have had three home runs as he whacked a first-pitch changeup to left field for his ninth home run.
It gave plenty of breathing room for starter Michael King, who went 2 ⅔ innings and allowed one hit with three strikeouts and a hit by pitch, but walked both of the final two batters he faced before being lifted after throwing 49 pitches.
“Velocity good, changeup working to get a feel for it, secondary stuff, it’s coming out good,” Shildt said. “All the shapes are good, everybody was pleased, Ruben (Niebla) was pleased, it’s just a matter of consistency of execution.”
While a game two starter for the NL Wild Card series has yet to be determined, the light workload could hint that King may be tabbed for it. Shildt mentioned the possibility for King to come back and “pitch in a couple different roles potentially” following Nick Pivetta getting the game one start.
Yuki Matsui replaced King and walked the first man he faced to load the bases, but got out of the inning with a ground out. The reliever ultimately went a career-long 2 ⅓ innings, allowing a solo home run to Geraldo Perdomo for the only run in the fifth, but worked around three hits and a pair of walks with a strikeout to earn his third win.
Adrian Morejon followed with a clean sixth inning that included a strikeout, then Mason Miller followed by retiring all three batters he faced via the K. Jeremiah Estrada allowed a lead off single in the eighth, then struck out the next three, and Robert Suarez closed it out by retiring the Diamondbacks in order with a finishing strikeout.
“Tonight went fairly according to plan, Yuki was fantastic, we knew he was going to come in well rested, so him and Michael being able to get through five was really important for us,” Shildt said. “We wanted one for Morejon, we didn’t want to extend any of them, but definitely Miller with the one-plus yesterday…he got the seventh so Estrada could help him out if he needed to, because we didn’t want him to go over about where he ended up finishing, and then Estrada and Suarez were both really sharp.
“Those guys are ready to go and got their work in.”
For the regular season finale San Diego will send JP Sears (8-11, 5.12 ERA) to the hill — they’ll have a chance to reach the 90-win mark for the sixth time in franchise history — while Arizona will send righty Brandon Pfaadt (13-8, 5.00 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. at Petco Park.
