The Los Angeles Dodgers have selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney on Saturday, the second to last day of the regular season.

Right-handed pitcher Will Klein, who has looked sharp since being recalled, has been optioned.

The Dodgers aren’t playing for anything over the final two days of the regular season, but will need to have some innings covered. Since Klein has pitched the last two days, the team has decided to bring up a fresh arm in the form of Heaney.

Heaney signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers just before the deadline to be postseason-eligible last month. Since joining Triple-A Oklahoma City, he’s been untouchable, allowing one run across 10 innings with 13 strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA.

While Heaney is unlikely to factor into the team’s Wild Card plans considering he’ll likely eat some innings on Saturday or Sunday, he could be auditioning for a role on the NLDS roster assuming LA advances.

As for Klein, he appeared to do enough to at least put him in the conversation for a postseason roster spot.

On the year, he made 14 appearances at the big league level, sporting a 2.35 ERA with 21 strikeouts across 15.1 innings. Since being recalled last week, he made four appearances, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
