It’s been a busy weekend in SoDo with both the Mariners and Sounders playing on Sunday, while three major highways have seen road closures all weekend for repairs.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) closed parts of I-5 through Kent, I-90 through Issaquah, and State Route 18 in Auburn at varying times between Friday and early Monday morning.

“We have another round of weekend closures for critical repair and preservation work this weekend that is going to help extend the lifespan of our bridges and roads,” said Kris Olsen, public information officer for WSDOT.

The combination of roadwork and sports games traffic caused a bit of a headache on the highway.

“It wasn’t horrible until we hit town. Lots of traffic,” Destiny Trammel told KOMO News on Sunday.

Many Mariners fans, like Doney Dawson, said the drive into Sunday’s game at T-Mobile Park wasn’t too bad, but the ride home may be another story.

“Normally it’s probably an hour, less than an hour, but depending on this game and traffic, it’s probably going to take an hour and 20 minutes,” Dawson said of his drive back to Puyallup.

As Sunday was the last full day of closures, some drivers claimed they were finally seeing relief.

“Yesterday was horrible, because we didn’t really show up as early as we did today, so it was pretty bad,” Trammel said.

She and her family learned their lesson and gave themselves extra time on Sunday morning.

“An hour early,” she said. “We had to make sure we were here, getting our parking spot, and just making sure we were on time.”

But not everyone who fell victim to the congested roads was heading to T-Mobile Park this weekend.

“I’m actually not going to the game, I’m trying to get to my workspace right over here to grab some equipment,” said Ben London. “So, the rest of the city has to exist while the game’s going on.”

Across the three major highways, WSDOT crews are working on several different projects.

60 concrete panels are being replaced on I-5, and bridge repairs in Issaquah wrapped up on I-90 Sunday morning.

Crews replacing bridge joints on SR-18 finished earlier than anticipated on Sunday.

All other roads are expected to reopen on Monday morning between 4 and 5 a.m.
