With the 2025 MLB regular season over, 18 of the 30 teams won’t play a game that matters until March 2026. Several teams not playoff-bound began the managerial change process on September 29, as three managers were relieved of their duties. Among them were four-time World Series champion Bruce Bochy, and three-time Manager of the Year Bob Melvin.
Bochy dismissed by Rangers
Texas dismissed manager Bruce Bochy on “Black Monday,” ending his three-year tenure as Rangers manager. Per an announcement from the team, Bochy was offered a front office advisory role.
Bochy led the Rangers to the World Series in 2023, the first in their franchise’s existence. The next season, Texas went 78-84. In 2025, the Rangers, despite holding onto a playoff spot in mid-September, went 81-81 and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.
It should be noted that the Rangers have a potential successor in-house. Skip Schumaker, the 2023 NL Manager of the Year, joined the Rangers’ front office after leaving the Marlins after the 2024 campaign.
Baldelli fired by Twins
Minnesota let go of Rocco Baldelli on the 29th, ending his seven-year tenure as the Twins’ manager.
Baldelli’s tenure included four winning seasons, headlined by a 101-win campaign in 2019. That was Baldelli’s first year as the Twins’ manager. That year also saw the Twins win one of three AL Central titles under his tenure.
The Twins went 82-80 in 2024, missing the playoffs despite starting September with a 74-62 record and in a playoff spot. In 2025, the Twins went 70-92 and underwent a significant selloff, trading away Carlos Correa, Jhoan Duran, and Griffin Jax, among others.
Giants let go of Melvin
The Giants axed Bob Melvin on September 29, ending his two-year run with the team.
Melvin took over as the Giants’ manager after the 2023 campaign, after he was let go by the Padres. The former Giants catcher went 161-163 as the team’s manager between two seasons.
It’s an interesting move, as Melvin’s option for 2026 was picked up by the team back in July. As of July 1, the Giants were 45-41 and firmly in the NL playoff race. However, the Giants finished the year 81-81 and out of the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
Other coaching notes
The Pirates were one of several teams that had interim managers in 2025. Don Kelly, who took over from Derek Shelton after 38 games, was signed to an extension, keeping him as full-time manager.
Kelly went 59-65 as the Pirates’ manager.
Carlos Mendoza will stick around as the Mets’ manager in 2026. It was confirmed by the team’s president of baseball operations one day after their 2025 season ended.
Meanwhile, in Baltimore, Tony Mansolino will be one of the likely several candidates to take over as permanent manager. Mansolino went 60-59 as the Orioles’ manager in 2025.
