The New York Mets’ 2025 season will go down as one of the most painful collapses in franchise history. Pete Alonso and Juan Soto were not enough to save the team. On June 12, they held the best record in baseball at 45-24. By the end, they had fallen apart, finishing 83-79 and missing the playoffs after a miserable second half.

As if the collapse wasn’t bad enough, drama arrived moments after the final game. Following a 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins that sealed their fate, Alonso announced he would use the opt-out in his contract to enter free agency. That decision, and especially its timing, didn’t sit well with many former players and pundits.

On The Phillies Show, Phillies Insider Jim Salisbury ripped Pete Alonso for how quickly he made his intentions known.

“Honestly, that comment turned my stomach when I heard it. I mean, the corpse, the body was not even cold yet,” Jim said.

“That answer sprinted off his tongue like he couldn’t wait to get out of town, and if I’m a rival owner and something you know, it resonates with me. It’s something in the back of my mind.”

Ruben Amaro Jr. also echoed the same sentiment, claiming that Alonso’s announcement shows that the team does not have a winning culture.

“Not 30 seconds after the season’s over and Pet Alonso’s like, ‘I’m gone.’ That tells you a lot about the whole mentality,” Ruben added.

Ruben also questioned the Mets’ entire culture. He said the clubhouse’s lack of unity and accountability showed in the way the season collapsed.

“There’s no Clubhouse, love, and culture there, And I think it has to do with a lot of different personalities in there, and they just don’t have winning type mojo.”

The timing may be questionable, but Pete Alonso’s numbers were not. He played all 162 games this year, hitting .272 with 38 home runs, 126 RBIs, and 41 doubles. Since debuting with the Mets in 2019, he has become the franchise’s all-time home run leader. Earlier this year, he signed a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out clause after 2025, which he has decided to trigger.

Alonso will be one of the top free agents this winter, and many teams will be interested. For now, his exit only adds more pain to the Mets team and fans.
