NEW YORK —

The Boston Red Sox are one win away from knocking the Yankees out of the playoffs and advancing to the American League Division Series.

Boston pulled off a 3-1 victory over their archrivals on Tuesday night.

The Red Sox trailed 1-0 for most of Game 1 before Masataka Yoshida’s pinch-hit two-run single in the seventh gave Boston their first lead of the game.

The Sox were backed by great pitching performances from starter Garrett Crochet and closer Aroldis Chapman.

History is on Boston’s side. Since the Wild Card series format changed, 18 out of 20 teams who won Game 1 went on to win the best-of-three series. It includes 16 sweeps.

First pitch for Wednesday night’s game will be at 6:08 p.m. Brayan Bello will be the starting pitcher for Boston.

If the Red Sox win Wednesday, it will extend their playoff success against the Yankees.

This is the sixth time the two teams have played against each other in the playoffs. The Red Sox won the last three matchups: in 2004, 2018 and 2021. Two of those seasons ended with Boston winning the World Series.
