The San Francisco Giants need a new manager, but it won’t be the one who led them to their only World Series titles on the West Coast.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Buster Posey, the Giants’ president of baseball operations, was asked if he’d consider his old manager Bruce Bochy for the role. Posey said he talked to Bochy “a couple of days ago,” but he quickly shut down the rumors about Bochy returning to his old job.

“I don’t even know what Boch’s plans are, if [he] wants to continue to manage or not,” Posey said. “The door’s always open here for some sort of role. But the way I think things are coming into picture in my mind, with where we want to go next, I don’t see us going that route with Boch.”

Bochy managed the Giants from 2007-2019, which included three World Series titles (2010, 2012 and 2014) and four overall trips to the playoffs. He was in charge for all but one season of Posey’s on-field playing career, with the exception being 2021. Since then, Bochy has spent the past three seasons managing the Texas Rangers, leading that franchise to its first-ever World Series title in 2023.

But the Rangers missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, leading to speculation that Bochy, 70, might be done in Texas in the final weeks of the season. As the Giants looked more and more likely to move on from Bob Melvin, national baseball writers couldn’t help but add fuel to the fire about the possible reunion in the Bay Area.

“It would be the most dramatic managerial change since Tony La Russa came out of retirement to manage the Chicago White Sox,” USA Today national baseball columnist Bob Nightengale wrote on Sunday.

The Giants fired Melvin on Monday morning, and Posey held a press conference promptly, declining to answer a Bochy-focused question because Bochy’s situation wasn’t clear yet. A few hours later, Bochy and the Rangers officially parted ways, opening the theoretical path to a reunion.

Now, after two days of rumors, Giants fans officially know they won’t see Bochy back on the dugout steps.
