Diamondbacks first baseman Tyler Locklear will undergo surgery this month on both his elbow and shoulder, a source said, a worst-case scenario after he was involved in a collision at the first-base bag in September.
In the seventh inning on Sept. 7, Locklear reached into the path of the Boston Red Sox runner Connor Wong in an attempt to catch an errant throw from Diamondbacks third baseman Jordan Lawlar.
Locklear, a right-handed thrower, suffered a torn ligament in his left elbow and needs the labrum in his left shoulder repaired, as well. Dr. Keith Meister will perform both surgeries on Oct. 16.
Locklear is expected back at some point next season, though the Diamondbacks do not have a clear sense for his timetable, in part because there are not many instances of players undergoing elbow and shoulder surgeries simultaneously.
Locklear, acquired from the Seattle Mariners in July as part of the Eugenio Suarez trade, struggled at the plate during a 31-game run with the Diamondbacks, hitting just .175/.267/.262 with three homers and 43 strikeouts in 116 plate appearances.
He had been expected to be a part of the club’s first base solution for 2026, along with Pavin Smith and others, but the surgeries could cloud the picture.
