Baseball: Mamaroneck edges RC Ketcham 10-9 in walk-off thriller
Mamaroneck defeated RC Ketcham 10-9 on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the 7th inning during baseball action at Mamaroneck High School April 22, 2025.
Section 1 released its 2025 playoff tournament seedings and brackets on Thursday night with only slight surprises.
Ketcham (Class AAA), Yorktown (Class AA), Panas (Class A), Putnam Valley (Class B) and Tuckahoe (Class C) received No. 1 seeds.
Defending Section 1 champ Ketcham, which fell by just a run in last year’s AAA state final to Fairport after winning a state title in 2023, might be viewed as a minor surprise first seed. It went 15-3 and split its two games with No. 2 John Jay-East Fishkill (17-2), while losing by a run to No 3 Mamaroneck (14-4).
But Ketcham edged John Jay-EF for the top spot by gaining more bonus points for playing tough teams.
Playoffs will launch Saturday with Class A and AA outbracket games.
The tournament will be single-elimination until the semifinals. At that point, it turns into double elimination but not in a traditional 2-out-of-3 format
Instead, in each class except C, which has only two teams, so will only play finals, the two losers from the initial semifinal games will play each other. The loser of that game will be done for the season.
The winners of the first two semifinal games will also play each other.
The winner of that game will automatically advance to the championship game, where it will need to win only one game to become section class champion.
The two teams that are 1-1 will then battle to see which makes the section final.
But since the winner will have one loss, it will need to win two games against the team that emerged from the semis with a 2-0 record.
Through the semifinals of each class, games will be held at the higher seed.
All finals will be held at Purchase College with the possible exception of in Class C, where games one and two will be there but it’s still to be determined whether, if there needs to be a game 3, it will be played there or at John Jay-Cross River High.
The ultimate goal, of course, for every team in the tournament is a state title.
But the road to get to the June 13-14, single-elimination state semifinals and championships in Binghamton is long and includes state regional play.
Below is the class-by-class schedule.
