When the Toronto Blue Jays take to the field this Saturday for their first game of the playoffs, you can bet that it’ll be quite the pop coming from the local crowd.

It’s been three years since the last time Toronto hosted a playoff game, and fans are eagerly anticipating how the American League East champions might fare this fall.

But one of the biggest questions on everyone’s minds is: will the game be played indoors or outdoors?

The seven-day forecast from the Weather Network shows temperatures as high as 24°C on Saturday afternoon, which would conceivably be warm enough for an open roof for Toronto’s first playoff game.

But at the Rogers Centre, indoor playoff games have been the standard since its opening as the SkyDome way back in 1989. And while a fair-weather outdoor baseball game is one of the best ways to watch any sport, it’s not usually the case come October in Toronto.

The Jays have hosted just five outdoor playoff home games in their history: four in the 1985 ALCS against the Kansas City Royals at Exhibition Stadium, and the 2016 Wild Card game against the Baltimore Orioles at their current home. Other than that, all of the Jays’ biggest moments in franchise history in Toronto have been with the roof closed.

Outside of climate control, there’s one obvious benefit to the dome: fans can get even louder inside a closed dome because the sound is enclosed within the stadium.

Who makes the call if the Jays play indoors or outdoors?

Any outdoor games would have to be approved by Major League Baseball, in consultation with Blue Jays stadium staff as is the tradition in the postseason. In the regular season, the Blue Jays themselves get the choice.

An official announcement would likely be made on the day of the game, and roof openings are typically announced via the team’s social media channels.

When are the Blue Jays playing this weekend in Toronto?
