Detroit Tigers celebrate winning AL wild card in 2025 MLB playoffs
The Detroit Tigers celebrate a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the AL wild card, advancing to the ALDS in the 2025 MLB postseason.
SEATTLE — With the Detroit Tigers having taken down the Cleveland Guardians, their American League Central rivals, to win the AL wild-card series and advance to the ALDS in the 2025 MLB playoffs, it’s time to reset the roster.
The Tigers — led by president of baseball operations Scott Harris and manager A.J. Hinch — will need to set their 26-man roster for the best-of-five ALDS against the Seattle Mariners, which begins Saturday, Oct. 4, at T-Mobile Park.
Any player in the organization as of Aug. 31 is eligible for the postseason roster, including players in the minor leagues. Teams are limited to 13 pitchers among the 26 players, but there’s no cap on position players.
The roster can change before every series in the playoffs.
The winner between the Tigers and Mariners will advance to play the Toronto Blue Jays or New York Yankees in a best-of-seven ALCS that starts Oct. 12.
Here is our prediction for the Tigers’ 26-man roster for the ALDS:
Position players (14)
Predicted to be on the roster: Dillon Dingler (C), Jake Rogers (C), Javier Báez (SS), Colt Keith (3B), Zach McKinstry (UTIL), Spencer Torkelson (1B), Gleyber Torres (2B), Kerry Carpenter (DH), Riley Greene (LF), Jahmai Jones (DH), Justyn-Henry Malloy (DH), Parker Meadows (CF), Wenceel Pérez (RF), Matt Vierling (OF).
The buzz: The Tigers still have some pitchers batting injuries, but the position-player group is nearing full strength. Third baseman Colt Keith (right rib cage inflammation) is all but certain to return for the ALDS, while outfielder Matt Vierling (left oblique strain) has a chance to do the same. If Vierling is activated, one of three right-handed hitters could be removed: Andy Ibáñez, Jahmai Jones or Justyn-Henry Malloy. All of them profile better against left-handed pitchers, but in their AL wild-card victory, the Tigers turned to Jones and Malloy in pinch-hit spots — not Ibáñez. Since Aug. 25, Ibáñez has hit just .167 against lefties, offering neither the production of Jones nor the quality plate appearances of Malloy. If Keith returns, the Tigers could remove shortstop Trey Sweeney. The Tigers have committed to Javier Báez as their everyday shortstop in the postseason, and if Keith starts at third base, then Zach McKinstry becomes both the backup shortstop and left-handed bat off the bench. Sweeney hit just .196 with a .548 OPS across 118 games during the regular season, and he didn’t get any playing time in the wild-card series.
Pitchers (12)
Predicted to be on the roster: Kyle Finnegan (RHP), Jack Flaherty (RHP), Brenan Hanifee (RHP), Tyler Holton (LHP), Brant Hurter (LHP), Tommy Kahnle (RHP), Troy Melton (RHP), Casey Mize (RHP), Keider Montero (RHP), Rafael Montero (RHP), Tarik Skubal (LHP), Will Vest (RHP).
The buzz: The Tigers have three traditional starters — Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty — but none of them are available to pitch in Game 1 of the ALDS. For Game 1, right-hander Keider Montero could be asked to cover the bulk innings since he hasn’t pitched in the postseason yet. After that, the plan seems straightforward: Skubal in Game 2, Mize in Game 3 and Flaherty in Game 4, if necessary, which would lineup Skubal to start again in a potential Game 5. The bullpen picture is likely to change, as right-handed reliever Brenan Hanifee could replace right-handed reliever Paul Sewald. The Tigers left Hanifee off the wild-card roster because the Guardians carried eight left-handed hitters (plus three switch-hitters), which was a bad matchup for him. Lefties hit .373 with a .995 OPS against Hanifee, while righties hit just .220 with a .549 OPS. The Mariners, by contrast, have just six lefties (plus three switch-hitters), creating more right-handed pockets that play to Hanifee’s strengths. As for Sewald, the Tigers didn’t use him in the wild-card series.
