Forrest County breaks ground on new youth baseball fields in Brooklyn

  • October 4, 2025

FORREST COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – The Forrest County Board of Supervisors officially has broken ground on two, new baseball fields at the Brooklyn Community Center.

This project is aimed at giving kids more opportunities to play while bringing the community together.

One of the new fields will be a small, T-ball field, while the other will serve children under 10.

The additions come as Forrest County Youth Sports has seen rapid growth in recent years.

“We started in 2021, and we started out with 53 kids, and every year we’ve grown substantially,” said Wayne Harper, Forrest County Youth Sports president. “This past season, we had 225 kids altogether.”

Harper said the extra fields should help cut back on the number of days needed for playing baseball games.

“With the amount of kids and the amount of teams we had, we ended up having to have games Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and, usually, seven or eight games on Saturday,” Harper said. “With these extra fields, that’s going to help tremendously.”

The $200,000 project is being funded through local donors and support from the county.

Leaders said it’s not just about baseball, it’s about creating a space for families to connect.

“I feel like that community is hunting for a place to come together,” said Terri Bell, Forrest County Board of Supervisors presidents. “It’s all about families coming together and getting to know everyone that lives in your community.

“And what a great way to do that than by having people come together and play a sport.”

The new fields were expected to be ready for play by spring 2026.

Anyone wishing to donate to South Forrest County Youth Sports can do so through the Pine Belt Community Foundation.
