CLEVELAND — Guardians seven-time All-Star Jose Ramirez produced a clutch RBI single in the fourth inning to tie the score 1-1 against the Detroit Tigers in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series on Oct. 2 at Progressive Field.
Facing a full count against Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, Ramirez hit the ball to center field to drive home George Valera from second base. Valera led off with a double.
Unfortunately for the Guardians, they failed to inflict more damage during the inning. Ramirez was caught stealing, and Chase DeLauter later grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Tigers seized a 1-0 lead in the third inning with Kerry Carpenter’s RBI double off Guardians reliever Tim Herrin, though Carpenter’s hit could have been scored an error. Guardians first baseman C.J. Kayfus tried to backhand the ball, but he couldn’t field it. The ball rolled into foul territory, allowing one run to score.
