After splitting with the Seattle Mariners to open the American League Division Series, the Detroit Tigers will return home to host the rest of the round with a chance at securing a place in the American League Championship Series on the line.
Tigers manager AJ Hinch shared Sunday that he is flipping his usual rotation for games three and four in Detroit this week. Hard-throwing right-hander Jack Flaherty will start Tuesday’s game three against the Mariners, and former Auburn ace and first overall pick Casey Mize will handle the action on the mound in game four on Wednesday.

Hinch says that he would feel comfortable with the order of Flaherty and Mize in the rotation being flipped, but that giving Mize an extra day of rest should provide the same results.
“We have to pick an order,” Hinch said Sunday. “We could do it the other way and feel completely the same, but we have to choose, and we’re going to go with this order.”
Mize threw three innings in the Tigers’ loss to the Cleveland Guardians in game two of the American League Wild Card Series last Wednesday. He gave up one run on one hit, a 1st inning home run to George Valera, over three innings of work with one walk and one strikeout. The Tigers tied the game in the 4th inning to take Mize off the hook for the loss, but the Guardians responded by scoring five runs in the 8th inning to secure the 6-1 win to even the series. The Tigers bounced back Thursday to clinch the series, 2-1.
Game three of the ALDS begins Tuesday at 3:08 p.m. CT, with Mize’s game four start beginning on Wednesday at 2:08 p.m. CT. Both games will be broadcast on FS1.
