COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – College Station City Council is taking a fresh look at the Midtown district after a proposed data center was declined for the area.
At Thursday’s council meeting, members will look into a proposed baseball complex located behind Costco. According to the proposal, the project would cost around $55 million, and the city is asked to contribute at least $15 million and 80 acres of land.
This comes after a proposed data center drew heavy pushback from neighbors who didn’t think the development fit in with the atmosphere of Midtown.
Councilman Bob Yancy told KBTX he agreed with the decision to reject the center and look into other types of development.
“We’re going to be looking at the future of Midtown on Thursday night and one specific project from the private sector that has approached us is about baseball fields,” Yancy said.
The Southern Rooth Baseball Complex would include 9 turf fields, one being a 3,800-seat stadium.

Lloyd Davis, president of the College Station Association of Neighbors, said backing the baseball facility supports the lifestyle that brought him back to his college town in the first place.
“We’re never going to please everybody, but we think it’s good for the area and we believe that the majority of the residents of that area also agree,” Davis stated.
Councilman Yancy said the proposed development, if approved, could potentially be the new home for the Brazos Valley Bombers, who recently moved operations from Bryan to College Station.
“It’s possible that the bombers could stay at a championship field at Veterans. It’s possible that the bombers could be at a championship field at Midtown business and ballpark if that is the council’s will to take a look at that,” Yancy explained.
