The Guardians can pitch, but they struggled to hit in 2025. Is there reason to hope for better in 2026?
If you look at ZiPS’ 2026 projections, which were made prior to the season, but are still useful, here are the weighted on-base average numbers each for of the current Guardians hitters:
Good news – based on projections (and a little eyeballing by me), this team has a decent shot at an above average MLB offense, IF they can have their main starters remain healthy. Should they aim for more than above average? Yes. But, after a 28th or 29th best offense in 2025, we will take what we can get.
So, what’s the problem, no need to add much this offseason? You may have noticed, that this lineup contains six players who bat left-handed, primarily. The Guardians had an 81 wRC+ vs. LHP in 2025 and a 90 wRC+ vs. RHP. Ideally, they need some right-handed help, at least in bench roles.
Maybe some of that comes internally. I know no one wants to see Jhonkensy Noel flail against pitches outside the zone or Johnathan Rodriguez ever touch a baseball glove again, but both players are young enough to hope for some improvement still. Angel Martinez has a 121 wRC+ against LHP in his young MLB career, so should be able to help spell DeLauter in center and help in pinch-hit scenarios. David Fry has a 128 wRC+ against LHP and can, theoretically, be deployed at catcher, first base, and a corner outfield spot in 2026. But, I do think the most obvious need on the roster is one-two more reliable lefty mashers.
I know everyone expects a reunion with Austin Hedges, and I am not opposed to that. But, if the team were able to run with Naylor and Fry as their catchers, it would free them to use their other three bench spots on right-handed bats who can reliably hit LHP. So, perhaps Angel, a reunion with Lane Thomas or equivalent lefty mashing outfielder and then trade or sign for a utility infielder who hits lefties well.
Finally, I don’t like to call for coaches to be fired until at least a three-year sample indicates that should be the case, but it sure seems like hiring outside the organization for some hitting coach help would be a good idea. The team desperately needs to finish development for this group of young hitters to have a chance at improving in 2026.
