The Seattle Mariners will look to close out the Detroit Tigers when they meet Wednesday afternoon in Game 4 of the American League Division Series.
The Mariners, by virtue of their 8-4 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night, are on the verge of advancing to the AL Championship Series for just the fourth time in franchise history.
The Mariners will send right-hander Bryce Miller (4-6, 5.68 ERA in the regular season) to the mound against the Tigers’ Casey Mize (14-6, 3.87).
The Mariners have history on their side. In division series, with the current 2-2-1 format, teams leading 2-1 and playing Game 4 on the road have advanced 23 of 34 times (67.7%), closing out the series in Game 4 in 19 (55.9%) of those instances.

Seattle gave the Tigers an inch, but the Tigers have taken a mile.
After the double from Jones, Javier Baez nearly gave Detroit the lead with a long fly ball that wound up just foul. However, that didn’t spell the end for Baez. Soon after, he smacked a single back up the middle to drive in Jones.
Suddenly, this game has been turned on its ear. Gabe Speier has yet to record a single out and after a Baez stolen base, the Tigers still have a runner in scoring position. Score: Tigers 3, Mariners 3
It didn’t take long for Detroit to get their second run of the game. The first pith from reliever Gabe Speier was met with a line drive down the left field line, which would score Dingler from second. Back-to-back doubles have the Tigers right back in this game. Score: Mariners 3, Tigers 2
It may have taken a while but the Detroit Tigers finally broke through in the fifth inning.
Catcher Dillon Dingler was the culprit, providing the Tigers with a one-out double with Zach McKinstry on first. McKinstry would come around to score
The double was just Dingler’s third hit of the postseason, but each of his hits have been monumental, including a home run in Game 3 of the Wild Card series against Cleveland.
That double forced Bryce Miller out of the game. Detroit has a run on the board and a runner in scoring position as Seattle moves to the bullpen. Score: Mariners 3, Tigers 1
After another quick inning for Detroit offensively, the Mariners returned to the plate and sent another runner home. A leadoff single from Randy Arozarena was immediately moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. That was enough for Cal Raleigh to drive him in with a single to right field. Score: Mariners 3, Tigers 0
After a nine-pitch bottom of the third, the Mariners were looking to extend their one-run lead. Naylor led off the inning with a difficult ground ball back up the middle. It went off the glove of pitcher Tyler Holton and behind shortstop Javier Baez. Naylor reached base for the second straight at-bat.
That was followed up with a single by Eugenio Suarez and a walk to Dominic Canzone. That was enough to push Holton out of the game. He didn’t record a single out.
Kyle Finnegan came in next and immediately forced a double play, but that was enough to score Naylor from third. Score: Mariners 2, Tigers 0
Cal Raleigh drew a one-out walk, but Casey Mize bounced back to strike out Julio Rodriguez and Jorge Polanco to end the top of the third. Mize now has six strikeouts. Score: Mariners 1, Tigers 0.
Detroit got its first hit, a two-out single by Zach McKinstry, but Dillon Dingler flied out to center to end the second. Bryce Miller got Riley Greene (groundout) and Spencer Torkelson (flyout) to start the inning. Score: Mariners 1, Tigers 0.
A two-out RBI single by Dominic Canzone gets the Mariners on the board with a 1-0 lead. New dad Josh Naylor got his first hit of the postseason, a one-out double into the right field corner. An out later, Canzone ripped the first pitch he saw from Casey Mize between first and second to score Naylor from second. After Victor Robles drew a walk, Mize struck out J.P. Crawford to end the threat. Score: Mariners 1, Tigers 0.
Bryce Miller matched Casey Mize in the bottom of the first, setting down the Tigers in order. Kerry Carpenter popped out to third, Gleyber Torres struck out swinging and Colt Keith tapped out to Miller. Score: Mariners 0, Tigers 0.
The same fan who caught Cal Raleigh’s home run during Tuesday’s Game 3 has returned to Detroit for Game 4.
Great start for Casey Mize, who sets the Mariners down 1-2-3 in the first. Mize got Randy Arozarena to ground to third, he struck out Cal Raleigh on a full count, and Julio Rodriguez flied to left.

Detroit will throw right-hander Casey Mize in this do-or-die game. Mize made his postseason debut for the Tigers in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card against the Cleveland Guardians last week. Mize allowed one earned run on one hit – a solo homer by George Valera – with two walks and one strikeout. He got the no-decision in the Tigers’ loss.
Mize faced the Mariners twice during the 2025 regular season. He went 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 8â…” innings pitched. His first start of the season came against them in Seattle, and Mize blanked the Mariners on just one hit in 5â…” innings with six strikeouts. He last faced them on July 12 and gave up six earned runs in three innings in a 15-7 loss.
Seattle will go with right-hander Bryce Miller, who missed more than two months of the season with elbow inflammation. In the eight starts since he returned in August, he struggled to a 5.62 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 41â…” innings. Miller was one of the Mariners’ best pitchers in 2024, going 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA.
Miller did not face the Tigers in 2025, and he last faced them on Aug. 15, 2024. During that outing, Miller tossed seven shutout innings at Detroit’s Comerica Park, allowing only two hits and striking out nine.

Seattle has never won an American League pennant, but it has been to the ALCS three times since its inaugural season in 1977. The most recent time was in 2001 after a 116-win season. The Mariners lost to the Yankees that year, and it was the second consecutive season Seattle was knocked out by New York in the championship series.
Mize, who will get the start on the mound in Game 4 for the Tigers, went 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA during the regular season. Mize made his postseason debut last week in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Cleveland Guardians. Mize allowed one earned run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout in the Tigers’ loss.
Detroit has made the postseason each of the past two seasons after a decade away from baseball’s playoffs. From 2011-14, the Tigers won the AL Central each year and made the World Series in 2012, when they were swept by the Giants. Detroit’s last World Series win came in 1984, when they beat the Padres in five games. Alan Trammell was named World Series MVP by batting .450 with two homers and six RBI.
