New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr responded swiftly to Yankees fans who criticized him for yawning after making a crucial error in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Chisholm Jr.’s flub came in the top of the third inning of a must-win game for the Yankees, who trailed 2-0 in the series entering Tuesday after dropping both games in Toronto.

With runners on first and second and Toronto leading 2-1, Daulton Varsho blooped a single to left-center field that was nearly caught by a sliding Cody Bellinger. New York centerfielder Trent Grisham quickly scooped up the ball and threw to Chisholm Jr. at second base to try and get a force out.

The throw was late, and after catching the ball, Chisholm Jr. did not realize Blue Jays utility man Davis Schneider was sprinting home. His throw was also late, helping the away team take a 3-1 lead and inching the Yankees closer to elimination.

Seconds after the run was scored, television cameras showed Chisholm Jr. yawning, an unwelcome sight to frustrated Yankees fans desperate for their team to wake up.

Chisholm Jr. responded to fans on X the next day, posting: “I yawn all day long! day and night so say what you want.”

While most everybody can relate to yawning at inopportune times, Chisholm Jr.’s apparent fatigue did not bode well considering he was in the middle of a high-stakes playoff game that his team was losing — in part because of him.

But it wasn’t his online explanation that got the Yankees faithful off his back. Rather, he silenced critics with his bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Following Aaron Judge’s mammoth three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that tied the game at 6-6, the division rivals remained deadlocked, until Chisholm Jr. came to the plate an inning later.

With one out and a 1-1 count, the 27-year-old crushed Louis Varland’s four-seam fastball over the right field fence to give New York a crucial 7-6 lead, which they did not give up on their way to a 9-6 victory that kept their season alive another day.

Chisholm Jr. isn’t afraid to pimp a home run, and he did just that when his ball sailed over the fence. The two-time All-Star made a smooth bat flip before rounding the bases to wild Yankee Stadium cheers.

As he crossed home plate, the ex-Miami Marlins player did his patented euro step before celebrating with his teammates and coaches in the dugout.

Even though Chisholm went from villain to hero in just a few innings, he and the Yankees face elimination yet again in Wednesday night’s Game 4.
