COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M baseball bats came to life thanks to a big night from second baseman Ben Royo and his two home runs

Royo finished the night with seven RBIs, including a grand slam, as the Aggies beat Lamar 13-6 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals grabbed the night’s first run in the second inning before A&M scored two in the third, followed by one in the fourth and a six-run explosion in the fifth.

Lamar made a charge in the eighth, scoring five runs, but A&M did enough to put the game out of reach and capture the midweek win.

A&M starter Gavin Lyons didn’t last very long as the Aggies went to the bullpen after just 1⅔ innings. 

Lyons finished the day giving up one run with two strikeouts, allowing two hits on 43 pitches.

The Cardinals’ starting pitcher, Carter Sutton, also had a short outing, going 2⅔ innings, giving up two runs, allowing two hits and four walks, striking out two on 47 pitches.

Next up for the Aggies is a home weekend series against No. 2 LSU.

Aggies vs Cardinals game score, highlights

Following the big inning by Lamar in the eighth, A&M came out in the bottom of the inning, grabbing two to push the lead back up to six, thanks to a Sorrell home run to straight away center field. The Aggies added one more with a Royo walk.

A Tracy single is followed by a Skinner double, adding the Cardinals’ second run of the night. From there, Ryan blasted a three-run shot off the A&M scoreboard to cut A&M’s lead in half. Lamar added another with a looper that dropped into right field.

A&M needed just one run to end the game with a run rule, but instead went down in order 1-2-3 to bring the game to the eighth inning and keep Lamar alive.

Aggies mowed down the Cardinals in order to end the top of the seventh.

Sorrell added another with a blast off the batter’s eye to push A&M’s lead to 10-1.

Lamar got two on board, and the Aggies went with a pitching change, bringing Kaiden Wilson in to clean up the inning. Despite the activity on the base path, A&M gets out of the jam unscathed.

A&M tacked on another with a leadoff home run by Henseler, pushing the Aggies’ lead to 4-1. A throwing error down to second base that drove in Sorrell to push the Aggies’ run total to five. Followed by Royo’s grand slam to straight away center to open the game wide open.

Lamar gets one batter on, but did nothing with it as it was another relatively easy inning for Rudis.

Royo struck again, this time with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, driving in Binderup, giving A&M its third run of the evening.

It was another easy inning of work for Rudis, who once again put the Cardinals down in order.

Royo got A&M on the board and gave the Aggies their first lead with a two-run no-doubt shot to left field.

In relief of Lyons, Brad Rudis sat the Cardinals down in order in his first full inning.

A&M went down in order with two groundouts and a strikeout.

After a double by Ryan and a hit by pitch to Moreno, Grizzafi drives in the game’s first run, ending Lyons’ outing as the Aggies went to the bullpen.

Much like Lamar at the top of the inning, the Aggies get two on, but the threat is cut short with an inning-ending double play.

Lyons allows two on board with a pair of walks, but a double play ends the threat and the inning with the Aggies escaping unscathed.
