After a victory in a 14-12 slugfest in the desert last night, the Colorado Rockies are surprisingly in line for their first series win of 2025. It’s a tall order against a very good Arizona Diamondbacks team that shut out the Rockies 8-0 in the first game of this series. Can the Warren Schaeffer-led Rockies return home with this one small triumph?
Chase Dollander will start on the mound for the Rockies. Dollander is coming off a strong outing against the Texas Rangers where just one bad pitch spoiled his night. He had worked 5 2⁄3 hitless, scoreless innings until a two-run home run gave the Rangers the lead and the Rockies never recovered. Dollander struck out seven batters with three walks and lowered his ERA to 6.88 on the season.
On the bump for the Diamondbacks is 36-year-old righty Merrill Kelly. Kelly has consistently had the Rockies number throughout his career. In 15 starts he has a 3.51 ERA over 95 innings of work and averages 4.67 strikeouts per walk. So far this season he has a 3.71 ERA over nine starts and has struck out 41 batters over 51 innings. Kelly has six pitches in his arsenal with a primary four seam fastball that averages 91.7 MPH. He also throws a changeup, a cutter, a sinker, a slider, and a curveball.
