SEATTLE — Of course, I wish I were writing a story about the Mariners clinching their first ALCS bid in 24 years tonight.
But after that long, what’s another two days?
And besides, would it be the Mariner way to not take it to a last-second situation with everything on the line?
So disappointing in the moment as it was to lose a 3-0 lead in the 5th inning and now have the season ride on a single game.

The Mariners relish this situation. They’ve had a flair for the dramatic all season. Now, this may be a new all-time high or at least a level not seen in 30 years, but the 2025 Mariners are built for this situation.
“Everything’s in front of us, and these guys have done this all season long, where they get in tough situations. And they know exactly what to do, and they do fight back, and they do bounce back,” said Mariners Manager Dan Wilson.
“And I’m not worried about that at all, and no better place to do that than at home. So I think we just continue to do the things we’ve been doing and just get back on the right track on Friday,” he added.

Make no mistake, the Mariners clubhouse was not overjoyed after the loss, but it wasn’t downtrodden either. Every player we spoke with had confidence in them, knowing they would bounce back on Thursday. It’s not a disrespect in any way to a talented Tigers team; it’s more about this Mariners team having been in situations like this all season and knowing the road, so to speak.
As Bryce Miller so perfectly said, “It’s more fun to win at home anyway, so we’ll go and do that.”
From his words to the baseball gods’ ears. The Mariners find themselves in the most exciting and anxious situation in sports. The one where a win means the entire city will be euphoric, but a loss would send it into sadness, at least for a while.
The stage is set, and everything is on the line.
Just the way the Mariners like it.
