Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez made sure he didn’t miss an opportunity to troll the Yankees.
Long after the Blue Jays officially eliminated the Yankees in Game 4 of the AL Division Series, during TNT’s postgame show after the Phillies-Dodgers game, at around 1 a.m., Martinez chimed in.
“Now, I finally realized who their daddy is,” Martinez said, via X/Twitter. “Oh, my godson … Vladdy Jr. is the daddy, and that is a fact. And I’m so happy for that, now they don’t have to search anywhere. They just have to look at Vladdy and really say, ‘You my daddy, Vladdy, you my daddy.’”
Vladdy is, of course, the Blue Jays’ first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who went 9-for-17 (.529 batting average) with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs against the Yankees in the ALDS.
The phrase “Who’s your daddy?” became a common chant anytime Martinez came to the Bronx. It began after Martinez’s loss to the Yankees in September 2004.
In a postgame interview, Martinez uttered the words, “I tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddies,” and fans never let him live it down.
From that point on, anytime Martinez took the mound in the Bronx, he’d be met with chants mocking him.
“WHO’S YOUR DAD-DY!”
Martinez resurfaced the phrase after the Houston Astros swept the Yankees in the 2022 AL Championship Series.
Appearing on the TBS postgame show after the Astros’ 6-5 win, he pondered this thought live on air:
“I have one question for all of New York: New York, who’s your daddy now?” Martinez said, via X/Twitter. “I just want to know. I want an answer, and I want it quick. New York, who’s your daddy? Should I say the Astros?”
The phrase came back during the 2025 AL Wild Card Series between the Yankees and the Red Sox.
After the Red Sox won Game 1 of the best-of-3 series, Martinez took to X/Twitter to cheer on his team.
“Let’s beat those Yankees,” Martinez wrote, via X/Twitter. “You know you’ve got this! Show them who’s their daddy!!!”
After the Yankees finished the series, winning the remaining two games and advancing to the NL Division Series, Yankees legend CC Sabathia clapped back.
This time, with a simple image of fans holding up a banner that reads, “Who’s your daddy!”
