Kyle Harrison is headed to Sacramento to join the Boston Red Sox.

WORCESTER — What a whirlwind of a week it’s been for Kyle Harrison.
On Sept. 2, the WooSox left-handed pitcher packed his bags in Worcester and headed to Boston with hopes of making his Red Sox debut at Fenway Park a day later. Concerns over an ankle injury, however, held Harrison back from ultimately doing so.
Exactly a week later, Harrison was packing his bags again. Just this time in Syracuse, New York (where Triple-A Worcester was getting ready to begin a six-game road series Tuesday) to head to Sacramento, California to join the Red Sox for their series against the Athletics.
Harrison, according to a source, is expected to be available to pitch for the Red Sox in California on Wednesday.
One of four players traded to the Red Sox on June 15 in a deal that sent former Boston slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, Harrison finally gets his shot to join the Red Sox after spending the past two-plus months with Triple-A Worcester — and the last week or so in limbo.
On Aug. 31, Harrison was scratched from his start with Triple-A Worcester to be a pitching option for the Red Sox three days later. Around that same time, the 24-year-old from California started to feel discomfort in his left ankle — which possibly occurred during a bullpen session in Durham.
Then, after feeling more discomfort following his flight back from North Carolina, it was decided that Harrison would undergo an MRI for his ankle. Although the scan showed no structural damage, according to Harrison, he was held back from his Red Sox debut.
“I just was open with (the organization), told them about it,” Harrison told the T&G last week. “And, obviously, they’ve taken the steps they think that is necessary, and I’m on board with it. So, just looking to get this thing in the right direction and we’ll be back soon.”
On Sunday, Harrison returned to the rubber and pitched one inning in a game with the WooSox. He allowed two hits, one run and one walk while striking out two.
In 12 appearances with Triple-A Worcester, since being acquired from San Francisco, Harrison is 4-2 with a 3.75 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 27 walks allowed in 50⅓ innings.
A former third-round selection of San Francisco in the 2020 MLB Draft, Harrison split time between the big leagues and Triple-A Sacramento before being traded to the Red Sox organization this season.
The 6-foot-2, 209-pound southpaw entered 2024 ranked by MLB.com as the Giants’ No. 1 prospect and baseball’s No. 23 overall prospect. Harrison made his major league debut in 2023 (making seven starts) and then recorded 24 starts with a 4.56 ERA in 2024 for the Giants.
“He’s going to be a huge piece for the Boston Red Sox, for not only now, but hopefully for the next five, six years,” Red Sox director of pitching Justin Williard said in June. “There’s really big potential here and (I’m) really excited about the kid and maybe (he gets) just a fresh start somewhere else. We’ll help him and get him going in the right direction.”
With the Red Sox reportedly planning to place Dustin May on the injured list Tuesday and call up fellow pitcher Connelly Early from Worcester to make his MLB debut, Harrison joins the growing line of lefties to make the leap from Worcester to Boston in the past month.
And although he had to wait an extra week for the chance to pitch for the Boston Red Sox, Harrison seems to finally be getting his shot. If all goes to plan, Harrison will slot in behind Payton Tolle, who manager Alex Cora said on WEEI will start for the Red Sox Wednesday.
“Obviously, a small blip and really disappointing in the short term,” Harrison told the T&G last week. “But hopefully, in the long term, it pays off when we get this thing right.”
