Bryan Armetta offers up a preview, prediction and pick for Friday’s ALDS Game 5 between the Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners.

So it’s come to this: Tigers vs. Mariners, Game 5. A trip to the ALCS hanging in the balance.

Neither of these two franchises have been postseason mainstays over the past decade. That’s what makes this matchup so fascinating; extensive playoff experience is hard to come by on both rosters. The visiting Tigers enter tonight in a unique situation, with ace Tarik Skubal toeing the slab. For the Mariners, it’ll be former All-Star George Kirby on the bump.

Which of these two World Series contenders will stave off elimination? Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Friday’s showdown between the Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners.

Detroit is favored (-131) over Seattle, with the over/under set at six runs. Let’s break down which side has the edge on DraftKings Sportsbook entering tonight’s contest.

Tigers vs. Mariners prediction, preview

In Game 2, the Mariners managed to score two runs off of Skubal en route to a 3-2 victory. A similar offensive output is needed against baseball’s most dominant pitcher. This season, the reigning AL Cy Young winner owns a 2.21 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 241 strikeouts. Including the postseason, Skubal has allowed more than two earned runs during ten of his 33 appearances in 2025.

There is no ‘kryptonite’ for the sport’s most lethal arm. However, Seattle has had a bit of success in this spot. Over six career meetings with the Mariners, Skubal owns a 3.53 ERA. That’s a terrific mark for most pitchers, but not Detroit’s leading man. In two of their three games, the M’s managed to score at least three runs off of the southpaw. Still, they can’t bank on scoring more than a couple of runs tonight.

It’ll be imperative for Mariners starter George Kirby to deliver a quality performance. The right-hander is more than capable, having pitched five innings of two-run ball in Game 1. It’s been an up-and-down season for the 27-year-old. However, he’s allowed six combined runs over his last four outings.

The Tigers enter Friday with some momentum, having scored a postseason-high seven runs in Game 4. However, most of their success came against Seattle’s bullpen. In this must-win matchup, expect Mariners manager Dan Wilson to utilize an all hands on deck approach. That could mean an appearance from Luis Castillo, especially if Kirby gets into trouble early. The former All-Star held Detroit to one hit over 4.2 innings in Game 2.

Tigers vs. Mariners pick, best bet

Skubal gives the Tigers an advantage during the early innings of this contest. However, as the evening goes along, that edge shifts towards the Mariners. Seattle wields the better lineup and bullpen, especially if Castillo takes the mound. In a potential nail-biter, expect the home team to claw out a gutsy win.

Best Bet: Mariners ML (+107)
