What a brutal way to end a season. You’ve got to feel for the Phillies.

This isn’t the first time Phillies fans have had to deal with heartbreaking loss.

Phillies’ postseason heartbreaking losses

Here’s a look at past playoff losses that left Phillies fans wondering why they even follow sports:

1993 World Series Game 6

The Phillies were holding a 5-3 lead in Game 6 in the ninth inning with closer Mitch Williams on the mound. Williams, who was known for his wildness, walked the first batter and allowed a one-out single before facing outfielder Joe Carter. Carter then hit the second series-ending home run in World Series history.

2009 World Series Game 6

The Phillies trailed the New York Yankees 3-2 in the series and needed a win to force a Game 7 to repeat as World Series champions. The Phillies sent future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez to the mound against the Yankees, but Martinez allowed four runs in the first three innings. The Yankees went on to win 7-3.

2010 NLCS Game 6

The Phillies and San Francisco Giants were locked in a 2-2 game going into the eighth inning when Juan Uribe hit a solo homer off reliever Ryan Madson to give the Giants the lead. San Francisco would win the game and series.

2011 NLDS Game 5

The Phillies faced the St. Louis Cardinals in a deciding Game 5 at Citizens Bank Park. Roy Halladay faced Cardinals ace Cris Carpenter. Halladay allowed only a first-inning run, but Carpenter pitched a shutout. To make matters worse, Ryan Howard tore his left Achillies tendon on the game’s final play.

2022 World Series Game 6

The Phillies had Zach Wheeler on the mound to try and force a Game 7 against the Houston Astros. Wheeler had a 1-0 lead in the sixth when he put runners on the corners. Phillies manager Rob Thomson pulled Wheeler for José Alvarado to face Yordan Alvarez. But Alvarez hit a three-run homer, and the Astros went on to win 4-1 and clinch the World Series.

2023 NLCS games 6 and 7

The Philles had a 2-0 and 3-2 series lead but couldn’t close the series out against the Arizona Diamondbacks, losing Games 6 and 7 at Citizens Bank Park.
