Sonoma County will be well represented in the next round of the MLB playoffs.

Andrew Vaughn, a product of Maria Carrillo High School, hit a go-ahead solo home run on Saturday night to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 5 of the National League Division Series.

It was the second home run of the postseason for Vaughn, who batted .286 with four RBIs and a 1.126 OPS in 14 at-bats for Milwaukee in the NLDS. He also hit a game-tying three-run home run in Game 2, which the Brewers won 7-3.

Vaughn has revived his career since being traded midseason to Milwaukee from the Chicago White Sox, who drafted him third overall in 2019. He was batting .189 with five home runs, 19 RBIs and a .531 OPS this season before being dealt in June. He spent a few weeks playing for the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate before returning to the big leagues in early July, where he rediscovered his form and was considered among the best hitters in baseball for around a month. In his first 16 games for the Brewers, he batted .365 with five home runs, 21 RBIs and a 1.157 OPS.

He finished the regular season with the Brewers, who had the best record in baseball at 97-65, batting .308 with nine home runs, 46 RBIs and a .869 OPS in 64 games.

The Brewers will begin the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

Vaughn is also far from the only Sonoma County native still playing in the MLB playoffs.

Brewers third base coach Jason Lane is a product of El Molino High School and Santa Rosa Junior College. He’s been on Milwaukee’s staff since 2015.

Sonoma County is also represented on other side of the bracket in the American League, where the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays will begin their best-of-seven ALCS series Sunday.

Tony Arnerich, a graduate of Montgomery High School and SRJC and a former assistant coach at Sonoma State University, is currently the bullpen coach for Seattle, while Justin Bruihl, a former Casa Grande High School standout, is a relief pitcher for Toronto.
