PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Governor Katie Hobbs has decided the future of Chase Field and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
On Friday, Gov. Hobbs signed HB 2704, which allocates up to $500 million in sales taxes, along with income taxes from select team employees, to fund renovations for Chase Field over the next 30 years. The ballpark, built in 1996, is one of the oldest in Major League Baseball.
In a video posted on X, Hobbs is joined by Derrick Hall, the Diamondbacks’ president, CEO and general partner, where they praise the move, saying the measure creates good-paying jobs.
“It’s a homerun for Arizona,” Hall said.
I’m not going to let Arizona lose the Diamondbacks. Today, I signed a bipartisan deal to keep the @Dbacks in downtown Phoenix—creating good-paying jobs and making sure families can enjoy baseball for generations. Let’s play ball! pic.twitter.com/WEBSFvKPLC

Lawmakers say all money will come from taxes paid on items bought at the ballpark. While the team has said they are willing to pay for at least $250 million for repairs, taxpayer money is needed to cover the rest.
Earlier this month, the bill was passed in the House and Senate following months of negotiations.
The Diamondbacks will now stay in downtown Phoenix through 2056.
Critics, including Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, previously said that the tax funds could impact the city’s ability to pay for police, fire and other public services.
