CLEVELAND, Ohio — Four Guardians position players were recognized Wednesday as finalists for 2025 American League Gold Glove Awards at their respective positions, with two seeking to repeat their success from last season.
Steven Kwan (left field), Carlos Santana (first base), José Ramírez (third base) and Daniel Schneemann (utility) were announced as finalists by Rawlings, which has handed out the coveted Gold Glove Award since 1957.
Voting by all 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team took place prior to the end of the regular season. Those ballots make up 75% of a player’s total, with the other 25% coming from the SABR Defensive Index. Winners will be announced Nov. 2.
Kwan has won three consecutive Gold Glove Awards since his debut in 2022. Santana took home his first Gold Glove in 2024. Ramírez is a seven-time finalist, but has never won the award. Schneemann is a finalist for the first time in his career.
Kwan led all left fielders with 22 defensive runs saved, and should be a strong candidate for the Platinum Glove Award in the AL, emblematic of the top overall defender in the league. He tied former Guardians infielder Ernie Clement for the most DRS in baseball, and led the majors with seven outfield arm runs saved according to FieldingBible.com.
Other AL finalists in left field include Wyatt Langford of Texas (12 DRS) and Tyler Soderstrom of the Athletics (10).
Santana, who was released by the Guardians in July, finished with the second-most DRS among first basemen. His 12 DRS trailed only Atlanta’s Matt Olson (17).
Other AL first base finalists include Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (8) and Ty France (9) who played with both Minnesota and Toronto.
Ramírez played 136 games at third and posted a .961 fielding percentage with just 13 errors in 330 chances. He led all AL third basemen with 235 assists.
Clement’s 11 DRS at third will provide strong competition for Ramírez, but the versatile Toronto defender only appeared in 89 games there throughout the season. Kansas City’s Maikel Garcia led all AL third basemen with 13 DRS.
Ramírez has never won a Gold Glove, having missed out in 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2018 and 2017.
Schneemann appeared at six different positions for Cleveland and committed just two errors in 342 chances. He ranked fourth on the club with eight DRS and was third behind Kwan and Ramírez with six Air, Range and Throwing Runs Saved according to Fielding Bible.
Clement is also a finalist for the utility spot, along with Mauricio Dubon of the Astros, who finished with 14 DRS and played seven different positions for Houston.
