Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is up for his first career Gold Glove after being named a finalist by Rawlings on Wednesday.

Carroll, San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and Milwaukee’s Sal Frelick were listed as the three right field Gold Glove finalists for the National League.

The winner will be revealed on Nov. 2.

This is the first time Carroll has been named a finalist for the award that honors the best defensive player at each position in each league.

He is also the only member of the Diamondbacks named a finalist after Arizona sported five last season (Gabriel Moreno, Christian Walker, Ketel Marte, Jake McCarthy and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.). McCarthy received the nomination over Carroll in 2024 for right fielders, but he lost the award to Frelick.

Frelick and Tatis have won the last two Gold Gloves for the position group.

Corbin Carroll improves as defender

Carroll boasts a strong case after putting together his best defensive season to date.

He tied his career high with 10 outs above average (nine in right field), which is a metric based on a player’s range.

Carroll has always been otherworldly fast, but his route-running and ability to track balls down has improved. It was a common site before games to see him and outfielders coach Dave McKay working on balls over his head.

It’s just a 10% ball Corbin Carroll snags here. How?

Speed. Good jump and quickly up to 29.8 ft/sec, a top speed only a dozen MLB players reach. The “catch” looks easy because it is, but most outfielders can’t get there to make it. pic.twitter.com/k4eMOepqbh

Playing right field at Chase Field compared to some other stadiums requires a defender to cover more ground, making Carroll an ideal fit for the ballpark. The deepest part of the park is at 413 feet in left- and right-center fields, while the right-field foul pole is 335 feet down the line.

Carroll also set a career high with eight defensive runs saved (DRS), which is a more all-encompassing metric that incorporates range, errors and arm strength.

He significantly improved his throwing arm from a bottom-shelf 82.6 mph in 2024 to a decent 86.2 mph in 2025. He made several clutch throws to cut down base runners, notably throwing out Los Angeles Dodgers speedster Hyeseong Kim at the plate in the 10th inning of a game in the final week of the season.

“Teams are smart and look for any advantage they can have. That speaks to what my goal is in regards to my arm for this year, make sure it’s not a weakness, make sure it’s not something that can be attacked,” Carroll said during the season.

Can Corbin Carroll win Gold Glove?

Carroll leads all NL right fielders in outs above average (OAA) with Tatis right behind him with eight.

Tatis blows out the competition in DRS, however, with 15. Frelick is second with nine.

This is largely because Tatis has great range paired with an elite throwing arm, averaging 95.5 mph on his throws. Right field is pretty shallow at Petco Park (322 feet), which paired with Tatis’ arm doubles as a deterrent for runners. He also robbed four home runs over a span of 27 games, including a shot from then-Diamondbacks slugger Josh Naylor.

Frelick led the group in outfield assists with 10, followed by Carroll’s nine and Tatis’ five.

Another advantage for Carroll is the lack of mistakes he made defending. He made one error all season in 1,189.1 innings, a fielding error back in May. His .997 fielding percentage leads the trio.

Tatis is probably the favorite to win the award again based on metrics, but Carroll has several arguments in his favor that should make it a tough decision. This won’t be a cheap award win, as all three finalists had terrific seasons patrolling right field.

The 2025 Diamondbacks as a whole were a subpar defensive team compared to standards and expectations, but Carroll’s emergence as one of the game’s elite outfielders was a positive development.

Carroll has also been nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award and the Hank Aaron Award.
